Vanona Lee Weir Haynes was the middle child of Louise and William Weir. She was born December 4, 1931 in Luling, Texas. When she was seven her family settled in Odessa where her father worked in the oil fields. A life-long resident of Odessa, Nonie – as her friends and family called her - attended Crockett Jr. High and Odessa High School. She was married to Ray Haynes from 1951-62. Although she had no children, she thought of her nieces and nephews as her own, especially her nephew, Billy, who watched over her and took such loving care of her in her final years.
She was a dedicated employee and hard worker. One of her first jobs was working at the historical Henderson Drug store. For many years she was a cashier at Bill Sears grocery on Grandview. After retirement in 1988, she enjoyed working in her yard, visiting family and caring for her beloved pets Marcie, Fluffy and Patches. She would want you to know that Fluffy the dog found Patches as a newborn kitten, and that’s how their little family was formed.
Born with the gift of gab, Nonie was a wonderfully animated storyteller. She was an inspiration to her niece, a television writer who wrote a television pilot for ABC based on Nonie and her siblings.
Nonie is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Kenneth Cox, her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Linda Weir, her nephews Terry Cox, Kenny Cox and Billy Weir and nieces Angela Wright, Stephnie Weir, and Sunni McGuire.
A memorial service will be held by her immediate family at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home on Saturday, September 1st. A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery on Tuesday, September 4th at 2pm.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home of Odessa.
