She attended school in Alton, graduating high school in 1948. She took some business courses at a local business college before taking a job as a bookkeeper at an automotive shop. She met Elliott Raymond Hale at the local YMCA. They married on December 26, 1955, moving to Huntsville, Alabama while Elliott was in the service. They returned to Alton after Elliott’s time in the service, where their two children, Michael Raymond Hale and Laurie Lynn Hale were born. Betty lovingly and efficiently managed the household and took care of the children. In 1964 the family moved to a small desert town in California named Trona. In Trona Betty was active in the Trona Community Church, a ladies bridge club and various other community activities. As her children got older, she returned to work as a receptionist in a mental health clinic. After twenty years in the desert Betty and Elliott moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for Elliott’s job.
Gardening was a passion of Betty’s throughout her life and she worked hard in every home cultivating blooms and lush growth, even in the desert. She enjoyed watching wildlife, especially the birds who would visit her garden feeders. In OKC she enjoyed collecting things such as bird figurines, baskets and Santa figurines. She loved landscapes, winter scenes, daisies and pictures of birds.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dora and Lester Cox, her siblings Lorraine Marshall, Merrill Cox and Eugene Cox and her husband Elliott R. Hale.
She is survived by her son Michael R. Hale and his wife Kathy Klopfenstein, her daughter Laurie L. Hale, her grandchildren Daniel Hale and his wife Alex, April Hale and her husband Steve, Alma Hale and her great grandchildren Isabel, Asher and Luna.
