

Cameron Craig Funk died peacefully on May 31, 2013 at the age of 90. Cameron was born at home on June 21, 1922 in Spivey, Kansas to Earl G. and Ella Branson Funk. Cameron enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 31, 1941 and made six ship-to-shore landings in the South Pacific at Tulagi, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima as a member of the “Forgotten Battalion”, so named because, unlike other Battalions, they were not relieved until after the sixth landing. Cameron was awarded the bronze star for meritorious achievement and great personal courage in the face of enemy fire on Iwo Jima in 1945. Cameron returned home after World War II and became the principal of the Consolidated School at Penalosa, Kansas. He married Arlee Vermillion on February 23, 1950 and Cam and Arlee lived in Wichita, Kansas and were blessed with four sons before moving to Oklahoma City in 1977.
Cameron and his son Craig, a geologist, formed Funk Exploration, Inc. in 1977 and were joined in the business by hi s other sons, Bob, David and John. Cameron was active in the oil and gas industry in Oklahoma City until his death. Cameron believed in service to his country and community and was civically active, involved in politics, and a faithful member of Crossings Community Church. He gave generously of his time and resources to those things in which he believed, not the least of which was his family.
Cameron was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, his beloved wife, Arlee, and his son John. Cameron is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Susan Funk, Bob and Carla Funk, David Funk and Boo Barnett, and Karen Funk, widow of his son John Funk, as well as nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at ten o’clock A.M., Tuesday, June 4, 2013 in the chapel at Crossings Community Church, 14600 N. Portland, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73134, followed by interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be from 6pm-8pm, Monday, June 3, 2013 at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests contributions in memory of Cameron Funk be made to Crossings Community Church, 14600 N. Portland, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73134.
Those who have had the privilege of knowing Cameron Funk will remember his jokes, his charm and his ready smile. He was dearly loved and he will be missed.
