March 24, 1943 – December 10, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Lorraine Swearengin on December 10, 2024, in Oklahoma City at the age of 81.
Carolyn was born on March 24, 1943, in Meeker, Oklahoma. She graduated from Meeker High School in 1961 and from Oklahoma State University in 1965. After college, Carolyn moved to New York City to embark upon a successful career in fashion merchandising. She worked for Bonwit Teller, Neiman Marcus, Woolf Brothers, Stewarts, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Eddie Bauer, The Limited, Harrods of London, and Sears, holding top executive positions at most of these companies. Through much of her career, Carolyn traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Central America.
Although her work was all-consuming, Carolyn always prioritized family. Her best friend, Stella Singleton, and Stella’s daughter, Jessica Singleton, became Carolyn’s immediate family. Jessica was Carolyn’s pride and joy. Carolyn also maintained regular contact with her parents, sister, and nephews, traveling to see them on holidays and birthdays whenever possible. Carolyn cultivated many lasting friendships as well. And she was a loyal friend, eager to help whenever any need arose, even when helping required personal sacrifice. Carolyn will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Dorena Swearengin, her sister, Francena Sabouri, and Stella Singleton. She is survived by Jessica Singleton of New York City, her two nephews, Greg Sabouri and Shawn Sabouri of Oklahoma City, and many other relatives and friends.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Carolyn’s live-in caregiver, Linda Newberry, who provided constant care for Carolyn over many years. Linda’s dedication and compassion were extraordinary.
