Born to Elizabeth Longmire Buxton and James Baxter Buxton in Oklahoma City on January 22, 1940, Charles spent his childhood in Ada, Oklahoma, where he earned the nickname “Good Time Charlie” for his larger-than-life spirit and personality.
Charles attended Tulsa University and the University of Oklahoma before graduating from Northeastern State University. Charles enjoyed his college years playing football and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He married Shari Matkin on November 22, 1967 in Oklahoma City. He began his career as a broker with Employer’s Insurance Company of Wausau, which led to a lifelong career in insurance and investments.
Charles was an avid sports fan and gifted athlete. He was an all-state high school football champion, an excellent swimmer and diver, a scratch golfer and possessor of an encyclopedic knowledge of players, teams and sports statistics. His knowledge and stories of the game delighted his four sports-minded grandsons, who are all loyal Sooners and Thunder fans as a result of “Buck’s” love of Oklahoma sports.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Shari; daughters Lisa Buxton Mathis and her husband Will, of Houston, Texas and Lainie Buxton Muller and her husband Steve, of Washington, D.C.; his grandchildren John Buxton Muller, Charles Hannon Muller, William Buxton Mathis and Nelson Brown Mathis; his brother William Baxter Buxton and his wife Kathy, of Duncan, Oklahoma., and their children Ginny Buxton Searcy and her husband Conner of Dallas, Texas and James Baxter Buxton and his wife Katherine of Oklahoma City.
His funeral will be held on Friday, September 26 at 2 p.m. at All Souls Episcopal Church in Oklahoma City with Father Bright and Father Marlin officiating. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Nichols Hills Parks, Inc. 6407 Avondale Drive, Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, 73116.
