In his early years the Whisler family moved often. But his maternal grandparents home was anchored in Guthrie Oklahoma. He shared a rich loving family history with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He had a strong backbone. He was an ethically moral man and exemplified: A man's word is his bond; Always do your best; Help others; Be loyal; Be honest; Be brave; Be strong.
He was a man of duty. Cliff proudly served in the National Guard. There he was awarded medals in marksmanship and sharp shooting.
Cliff was an outdoorsman and adventurous. In his 30s, he was an accomplished hang glider pilot. He was called "Cliffhopper".
On his 40th birthday, he wanted to hang glide and tied a rope to the car bumper. His son, Scott, took off with him and kite in tow. The plan was for Cliff to release the rope at the appropriate height and speed. The plan didn't include Scott braking for a dog.
He had a brilliant mind and filed patents on several of his inventions. He was a MacGyver for his time.
His lifelong vocation as an Alfa Romeo mechanic spanned the course of over 50 years. He and Scott and worked side by side at Foreign Carriage for a while. He was well known and respected in the vintage Alfa community. He declined national and international race circuit pit crew offers. Cliff always preferred staying close to home at the Hallett Raceway.
First and foremost Cliff was a family man. He was a devoted son and friend to his mother Juanita until her passing.
He was never called Cliff by family. He was C.H., Bro, DaddyO, Grandpa, Uncle C and "C".
As a boy he got into many mischievous adventures on his own and with his cousins, especially the Blair boys. One of their favorite games was throwing walnuts at Cliff's sister Rita. She would tell on them. The boys would get in trouble and then throw walnuts again. He made it up to her many times in many ways over the years.
He "became the man of the house" in an early age. This required him to take his little sister, Kathy, to first grade on the back of his Harley Panhead. He is forever her biggest hero.
You could set your watch when it was time for his Sunday visit with his daughter Amy, and Jeff, Parker & Jordan. His proudest moment was being able to walk his granddaughter Laney down the wedding aisle to marry Chase. His smile came a little quicker and his eyes shown a little brighter around great-grandsons Cale, Zeke and Gabe. Even as a grand uncle he faithfully sent cards to family in Maine.
At the holidays, his famous guacamole was the first thing his niece and nephews dug into. He like being sous chef and hand crafting appetizers.
Cliff was soft spoken with a dry sense of humor. He requested his ashes be put in a circular doorstop, "So I'll always be around.”
He leaves behind so many. Everyone that met Cliff Whisler liked him.
The family regrets due to Co-Vid concerns private services are pending. In lieu and of flowers, the family request donations be made in Cliff's name to PBS or the Hydrocephalus Association.
