Burial took place at Jones I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Jones, OK. Born August 13,1920 in Durant, OK to Walter F. and Maggie Gustavy (Rambo) Thornton, she grew up on a farm with 16 siblings and several step-siblings. There were so many children that they didn’t all fit in one house. There were two houses on the farm; the older children lived in the big house, and the parents and younger children lived in the smaller house. Maggie, Dorothy’s mother, would cook big pots of food and carry some of it to the bigger house for the older children to eat.
A resident of Oklahoma for nearly 90 years, Dorothy worked in a military assembly line, bucking rivets at Douglas Aircraft Plant in Midwest City during WWII. She later worked at Macklanburg-Duncan as a polisher before she married. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, baking specialty cakes, sewing, cross-stitching, and crafting all sorts of wonderful objects with plastic canvas. She is best remembered for her mandarin orange cake recipe and her sweet pickled beets--homegrown and canned in her own kitchen. A quart jar of those delicious beets once fetched a hefty $60 at her family reunion auction. Dorothy was a wonderful example of faith, hope, and love. She was sweet to her very core, and will be greatly missed.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; parents in-law, James "Jim" and Clementine "Clem" (Cox) Hambrick; her husband, Rice Wesley Hambrick; 13 of her 15 siblings (Harvey, Leonard, Bill, Lois, Archie, Opal, Lillie, Corrine, Bud, and Hazel); 2 brothers-in-law (Hollis and Joe D.); 5 sisters-in-law (Minnie, Ethel, Elzie, Esther, and Zelma); both step children, Alfred Kenneth Hambrick and Betsy Clemaline Breland; and granddaughter, Paula Davis.
She is survived by her brother, Walter “Junior” Thornton (and wife, Jula) of Shasta Lake, CA; her sister, Betty Lynch (and husband, Maurie) of Antioch, CA; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; her grandchildren: Joan Willard (and husband, Richard) and Barbara Maldonado both of FL; Robert Hambrick of NC, and Brent Hambrick (and wife, Colette) of TX; 17 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Her most memorable phrase was, “I love you, and don’t you ever forget it!” We will never forget you, Dorothy, nor will we ever forget your genuine lovingkindness and sweet countenance. Thanks for the memories!
"This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." Psalm 118:24, 29
