September 27, 1917—September 28, 2014
Dorothy Lounora Allee VanCamp, 97, passed away on September 28, following her birthday celebration where she was surrounded by close family and friends.
It is not unusual to hear the name “Dorothy” and think of the main character in the Wizard of Oz. However, Dorothy Lounora Allee VanCamp was the leading lady in our lives. Just like Judy Garland’s character, our Dorothy was born on a ranch. And, just like the Wizard’s Dorothy, our Dorothy had a big heart, a sharp brain, and unparalleled courage.
Dorothy was born in Hammon, Oklahoma, and was raised in the Allee ranching family. She was proud of her heritage and believed her hard-working Western Oklahoma background made her a strong and confident woman. She married James VanCamp in San Francisco and attended college in Southern California. She returned to Oklahoma City and retired as an accountant from the Highway Department, where she officed at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
She enjoyed playing bridge and was a competitive master player. Dorothy also was an avid traveler and went on 32 cruises. She was active in the Friendship Forces, was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and president of her Sunday School Class.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Beulah Smallwood and Lafayette Allee; husband, James VanCamp; brothers, Bob Allee, Ed Allee and Clifford Allee and twin sons Gene and Jack. She is survived by her daughter Jami Allee VanCamp and fiancé Mark Cravens. She is also survived by nephews Bob Allee, Don Allee, John Allee and Bil Payne; nieces, Diane Atriano, Gayle Anglin and Kathy Cook; sister-in-law Barbara Allee; and cousins, LaRue Stoller, Heather Switzer, Lara Switzer, and John Switzer.
As Dorothy ventured down her yellow brick road, she took us on the trip of a lifetime. Just to be in her presence was fabulous. She was beautiful and happy with a gorgeous smile. She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her daughter and best friend. I love you Mom, not to worry!
Viewing with the family will be Thursday 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hahn—Cook at 6600 Broadway Extension. The funeral service is scheduled for Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church at 1212 Bedford. Arrangements under the direction of Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Funeral Directors, Oklahoma City, OK.
