Elsie M. Long

Our Mom, Elsie Mae (Brewer) Long, born June 15, 1926 in Kemp, Texas died December 26, 2010 in Oklahoma City and is now resting in the arms of Jesus after a 20 plus year bout with Parkinson’s disease. She was one of 10 children born to Henry and Myrtle Brewer.

Mom graduated from Kemp High School in May 1944, where she played on the girl’s basketball team. After graduation she hopped on a bus to Dallas, where she got a job with an insurance company in the Mercantile Building. She often spoke of how the girls in the office would wear roller skates to get around in the building.

Mom married Arthur Long in Gainesville, TX on January 14, 1946, while he was serving in the US Army. They had four children who survive her: Pamela, and her husband Larry Lopez; Teresa; Arthur Bruce; and Matthew Long. One sister, Dorothy, and husband Bob Henson of Corona, CA; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive her. Her best friends, Anna Yetter and Bessie Robertson, predeceased her.

Mom worked 21 years as a US Postal Service Letter Sorting Machine Operator, retiring in 1989. She was always a sweet, giving person, somewhat shy with a quiet demeanor. Being fond of horses and horse racing, she owned Rumor of Sweetness, a thoroughbred filly. She loved the country life and lived in southern Logan County until her later years, when she moved to Oklahoma City and finally The Lakes Care Center.

Although Grandma loved all her grandchildren, she had a special place in her heart for Zak, her grandson with special needs. They became very close while she resided with him and his mom, Teresa, for several years. Zak will sorely miss his “MiMi”.

Services will be held in the chapel of Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd, Oklahoma City, OK at 11:00 am December 29, 2010. Burial will be at Arlington Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City.
