

Gaines LaMoine Neal, a loving husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather, successful businessman, and World War II veteran, passed away on Sunday, July 16th, 2023 at the age of 97 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Born in Porum to John and Bertha Neal, on June 14th 1926, LaMoine lived a remarkable life filled with love, courage, and remarkable achievements.
LaMoine's journey began during a tumultuous era marked by war and economic depression. On February 13th, 1945, he married his beloved Mary LaVern Jones, and their bond would prove unbreakable throughout their 78 years of marriage. Shortly after their wedding, LaMoine answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States military to defend his country during World War II. With valor and determination, he rose through the ranks to become First Sergeant, stationed in the Southwest Pacific, where he fought against the Japanese forces until the end of the war.
After returning from the war LaMoine and Mary settled in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, where they raised their three children: Barbara, Gaines Jr., and John. LaMoine's astute business acumen led him to establish and operate several successful local businesses, including Neal's Thrifty Wise, Neal's Grocery, and Neal's Furniture.
LaMoine’s entrepreneurial spirit inspired his children, who went on to operate their own furniture stores in Shawnee, Muskogee, Stroud, and Okmulgee. Witnessing his grandchildren carry the family trade into the third generation filled LaMoine with immense pride.
In addition to his remarkable achievements in business and family life, LaMoine Neal possessed a generous and philanthropic spirit. He was widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to helping those in need, graciously sharing his wealth and resources with compassion and kindness. LaMoine's philanthropic endeavors extended beyond individuals, as he played a vital role in the establishment of Oklahoma Christian University, where he served as a founding member and lifelong trustee. His dedication to the university's mission of fostering academic excellence as well as nurturing the minds and hearts of students reflected his deep belief in the power of education to transform lives.
LaMoine and Mary spent their later years in Oklahoma City, embracing their love for reading and cherishing time spent with family and friends. They celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary, surrounded by the love and admiration of their two children, eleven grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
LaMoine Neal's life exemplified loyalty, perseverance, and love. His unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his community will forever inspire those who knew him. LaMoine’s memory will be carried forward by his loved ones, a legacy of resilience and devotion.
