James Patrick Gorman passed away October 1, 2023 at the age of 97. Jim was a devoted member of the Catholic Church his entire life. Along with his family, his faith was the most important thing to him.
Jim was born in El Reno, Oklahoma to Anna May and James M. Gorman on January 4, 1926. He graduated from Sacred Heart School in El Reno in 1944. Jim joined the United States Army and served for 2 ½ years, including during the last years of World War II. After his honorable discharge, Jim attended the University of Oklahoma and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. While at OU, Jim was a member of a Catholic Fraternity.
Jim spent most of his working career at Allstate Insurance Company. He retired from Allstate at the age of 65. After retiring from Allstate, consistent with his faith, Jim spent his remaining years in service to others. He delivered meals for Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church to people of need for 12 years. He was also a member of the Epiphany Men’s Group. Among other things, the Men’s Group set up and ran casino parties to help raise money for worthy causes sponsored by the Church. Along with his wife Norma, Jim served 10 years as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital. Jim did volunteer tax work for AARP for 10 years.
Jim always stayed active and had a number of hobbies. Golf was one of his favorites. He played into his 80’s, and always enjoyed playing a round when one or more of his sons could join him. Jim and Norma were members of the Classics Group at Epiphany, and were members of a dance and dinner group that always had a big event on New Year’s Eve. On top of everything else, Jim and Norma were able to travel to much of the United States and to many countries around the world.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack. Jim is survived by his wife, Norma; children Jack, Randy (wife Lorraine), Gary, David (wife Debbie), Lisa Mullins (husband Rick) and Mike (wife Laura); and nine grandchildren Bo, Ben, Bonnie, Lillie, Trevor, Brandon, Ryan, Jacob and Molly.
Marrying Norma was the best thing Jim ever did. She was his best friend, his constant companion, and his partner for life. They celebrated 70 years of marriage on September 12, 2023.
Jim’s proudest moments were watching his six children and nine grandchildren grow up. Jim was a kind, gentle and humble man who was devoted to his faith and family. He will be forever loved by his family and remembered for the goodness he brought to their lives.
There will be a Rosary at 6:30 pm, Thursday, October 5, 2023 with a Wake following at 7:00 pm at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm at St. Ann Independent Living, 7501 W. Britton Road, with interment and military honors at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
