Jo Carol Martyn Cameron passed away peacefully at home with her son and daughter by her side on Thursday, September 1, 2022. She was blessed to be with her granddaughters and other precious family in her final days. Jo Carol was born on June 27, 1936 to Ted and Lola Jean Martyn in Oklahoma City. After graduating from Classen High School, she enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television speech. In the fall of her freshman year at OU, she pledged the Alpha Iota chapter of Delta Gamma. An active member in college, she served as Rush Chairman in the summers in Oklahoma City, for three years. Jo Carol remained an active member of her beloved Delta Gamma. She loves to reminisce about pledging and the bonds that she and her sisters built and still share. She was honored to be named the Delta Gamma Women of the Year in 2012.
In February of 1959, Jo Carol married CB Cameron, and they had two children, William and Lynda. She began her many years of community service. She, with her husband, proudly founded Westminster Day School. Her husband was president of American Fidelity Assurance Company. She enjoyed helping plan the company’s annual conventions. Jo Carol also served as an executive member of the Junior League for many years, holding positions such as Corresponding Secretary and Nominating Chairman. As an avid supporter of the arts, she served as President and Vice President of the OKC Symphony Orchestra League and as an active member of the Board of the Oklahoma City Art Museum. Jo Carol is a member of the American Fidelity Foundation Board, which enabled her to be a founding member of the Annie Oakley Society in 2011 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
Her greatest joys was time spent with her family. Some of her fondest memories are of being a homeroom mother for both Bill and Lynda. In 1977 the family was in a tragic plane crash resulting in her husband’s death and her being paralyzed. This tragedy and her injuries did not stop her from continuing to be actively involved in the community where she especially loved working with children. She was enthusiastically involved with the MAPs for Kids initiatives. She also enjoyed working at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum through the Junior League as co-chair and chairman of Puppet shows for the early grades.
Jo Carol is preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Her loving family surviving her are her son Bill Cameron and his wife Anna, her daughter Lynda Cameron, her granddaughters, Caroline Ikard and husband Gabe, Liza Reilly and husband Mitch and Claire Cameron as well as her great-grandchildren, Cameron Ikard and Sterling Reilly. In a fitting tribute to a life well lived, as Jo Carol left her residence for the last time a rainbow appeared overhead.
A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73118, at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her memory to Westminster Day School, The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum or the Y.W.C.A.
