A woman with flair and a knack for storytelling, JoAnn Parman passed away at Baptist Intergris Hospital in Oklahoma City surrounded by family on Friday, July 18th. Born in Oklahoma City to Ruth and Howard Spaar on December 8, 1927, JoAnn was known for her love of teaching and her ability to entertain an entire room with her stories. A mother of 2, a grandmother of 3 and a great grandmother of 2, JoAnn was proudest of her family which began when she married Joe Wiggins in 1953 and began again when she married Lloyd Parman in 1966. JoAnn was especially interested in making sure her children's education was the best, following them closely through the PTA from elementary school to high school. She also taught Sunday school for many years and would tell anybody who listened how country music star Vince Gill was her favorite fourth grade student because he always had the prettiest eyes.
She volunteered as a docent at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum since 1980, sharing her passion for western art and helping organize events at the museum. JoAnn helped orchestrate the beginnings of the Skyline Urban Ministry, helping impoverished families and children through clothing drives and free dinners. An avid traveller, JoAnn and Lloyd travelled to Europe several times and she especially loved Germany and Ireland.
JoAnn preferred being called “Grandmother” by her grandchildren because it was fancy just like her silver exercise sneakers and signature red nail polish.
JoAnn is preceded in death by: her parents Ruth and Howard Spaar, first husband Joe Wiggins, and stepson Terry Parman. She is survived by: husband Lloyd Parman, son Dane Wiggins and wife Joan of Edmond, grandson Tim Wiggins of Edmond, granddaughter Anne Cauthen and husband Blake, granddaughter Cara Gray and husband Zach, great grandchildren Luke and Kate Cauthen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum or Cornerstone United Methodist Church.
Arrangements under the direction of Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Oklahoma City, OK.
