August 19, 1958 – December 26, 2024
Bethany, Oklahoma
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Michael Summers, 66, of Bethany, Oklahoma, on December 26, 2024. John was surrounded by the love of his family at the time of his death.
He was born on August 19, 1958, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to Bill and Shirley Summers.
John graduated from Cleveland High School in Cleveland, Oklahoma, in 1976, where he had a standout career as a basketball player. His talent on the court earned him recognition and continued into college, where he played for Midwest Christian College in Oklahoma City. His love for basketball didn’t stop with his own playing career—John later took great joy in coaching his sons, Dustin and Travis, in both basketball and baseball as they grew up. His enthusiasm for sports and his dedication as a coach made a lasting impact on his sons and many others.
John met the love of his life, Mari Angela Summers, while attending Midwest Christian College, and they were married on June 2, 1979. They spent 45 beautiful years together, building a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. John’s love for Angela was evident in everything he did, and their partnership was the foundation of his life.
John dedicated 33 years to his career at AT&T, where he was known for his work ethic and commitment. In 1987, he was honored with the Rider Service Award for going above and beyond the call of duty. Yet, the greatest accomplishments of John’s life were the countless ways he impacted those around him—whether at work, in his church, or in the lives of his family and friends. His heart was as big as his smile, and he was always ready to help anyone, at any time. Whether it was offering a hand to a neighbor, mentoring a young person, or simply listening to a friend in need, John’s kindness and generosity knew no bounds.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Shirley Summers, and his mother-in-law, Sequita O'Neal, and father-in-law, Wesley O'Neal. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mari Angela Summers; his sons Dustin Summers (Emily) and Travis Summers (Jamie); and his six cherished grandchildren: Caitlin, Gavin, Gage, Kennedy, Camdyn, and Griffin Summers. He is also survived by his older brother Bill Summers and his wife Gina, his younger sister Jeannie Reamy and her husband Bryan, his sister-in-law Shelly Hillemeyer and her husband Craig, his sister-in-law Marta Bredy and her husband Roger, and brother-in-law Michael O'Neal and his wife Kim, and loved nieces and nephews.
John was an especially proud grandfather, and his grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved spending time with them, playing games, telling stories, and simply being with them. His love for them knew no bounds, and he cherished every moment he could spend with them.
John also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs. He was known to carry dog biscuits with him wherever he went, always ready to share a treat with any dog he encountered. His kindness and gentle nature made him a friend to both people and animals alike.
John was a long-time member of Forest Hill Christian Church, where he found support and fellowship with his church family. His faith was important to him, and he valued the connections he made there. In addition to his church involvement, John enjoyed being part of the Forresters Organization, a bowling league where he built lasting friendships. He also loved playing softball, where his competitive spirit and sense of humor made him a favorite teammate.
John’s life was a testament to the power of kindness. Despite facing his own struggles, he remained a beacon of generosity, always putting others first. His warm heart, infectious smile, and selfless spirit touched everyone who knew him. John’s legacy is one of love, support, and a willingness to help anyone, at any time. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to experience his friendship and love.
In honor of John’s legacy, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Foundation in his memory.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Home on January 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
