She was born in Crawford Co, Indiana, to Herbert & Ruth Kemp Cox, one of 9 children in the family. When Lilly was 14, she left school to care for her siblings as her mother was gravely ill. At age 16, she married Wayne Roberson. They had 2 daughters, Pamela Gail and Angela Rene', and lived on a farm in beautiful southern Indiana.
Wayne died very suddenly, leaving Lilly a single parent of 2 young children. At age 34, she returned to the classroom to finish her high school education. She then went on to graduate from Oakland City College in 1967 with a degree in elementary education.
She was introduced to Rev. Harold Himes by a mutual friend, and on July 1, 1967, they were married. This brought two more children into her life, Jeannie & David Himes. She moved to Oklahoma, where she would live the rest of her life. They lived in McAlester, Skiatook, Kingfisher, Cordell, and Bethany, and in each place she taught school. She received her Masters in Special Education from Southwestern State in Weatherford in 1979.
Upon retirement, they lived in Bethany, and Lilly was able to fully enjoy her hobbies – especially quilting, playing dominoes, and gatherings and trips with the Sunday School class from St. Mark's United Methodist. A few years ago Lilly & Harold moved to Spanish Cove in Yukon.
Lilly passed away on Monday, October 13, in Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold Himes, by her husband Wayne Roberson, and by 6 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children Pam Roberson of Skiatook, Angie Hildenbrand (Jim) of Dallas, Jeannie Himes (Jim) of Norman, and David Himes of Edmond; by her brother Richard Cox and sister Marian Gibson; by her grandchildren Tamme, Whitney, Lucas, Shaun, Andrew, Sarah, & Sam; and by great-grandchildren Colin, Cale, Sloane, Harrison, and Aeryn, and by many nieces and nephews.
A child of God, she now rests in God's arms.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's UMC in Bethany on Wednesday, October 22, 2:00 pm.
Arrangements under the direction of Guardian Funeral Homes West Chapel, Oklahoma City, OK.
