Maria Papasarantou passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 7, 2021 surrounded by her family. Born on August 24, 1929 in the mountain village of Roino, Greece, she was the last surviving child of 4, born to Panayiota and Labros Michalopoulos. She married the love of her life, Nikos Papasarantou in 1964 and they moved from Greece to Oklahoma City for a better future together. She and Nikos were co-owners of The Cadet Cafeteria, a popular downtown eatery, where she enjoyed serving customers and meeting people. Later in life, she loved to drive through downtown OKC and see all the changes and reminisce of the olden days spent working downtown.
Maria was very active in her church, St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member for over 55 years. She had a very strong faith and loved her community. Maria helped bake for the annual Greek Festival and participated and volunteered wherever and whenever she could.
In her later years, Maria enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, which brought her much happiness. She took joy in simple activities such as gardening, baking baklava at Christmas for family and friends, and watching NBA basketball, especially the OKC Thunder. She loved to pass her time reading celebrity tabloids and fashion magazines. She was always in the know about the latest trends and in her earlier years took pride in sewing for herself and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nikos, and survived by her children, Chris and Angela; son-in-law Jim, and Katerina Papasarantou; and grandchildren, James, Avery, Niko, Anna Maria, and Freddy; along with extended family and friends whom she adored.
