Marjorie (Jackie) D Johnson, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on August 26,2025 in Oklahoma City. Jackie was born on November 21,1932 and adopted shortly thereafter by her loving parents Byron E. (Jack) Compton and Eva Marie Corbell Compton in San Antonio, Texas. She was the only girl in the family thus a Daddy’s girl and quickly known as “Little Jack” then in later years as “Jackie”.
As a teen Jackie shared her beautiful singing voice at church and on the radio in Gainesville, Tx and followed her engineering father around to his jobs learning how to survey land. She met the love of her life, J.Y. Johnson, in her senior year at Gainesville High School. They married on Christmas Eve, 1949. They were married for 62 years.
Jackie was a devoted wife and mother spending all her time caring for their four children while JY was often away for long periods of time working at oil drilling sites in Oklahoma and in later years at a variety of businesses they owned in Greenville, Sanger, Spur and Gainesville, Texas. She was most helpful in bookkeeping/accounting for the business, PTA officer for the schools, and the best hostess for many sleepovers for the daughters. All the teens who frequently joined her for dinners or sleepovers knew her as “mom”.
Jackie was an avid reader which also gave her a desire to see all the places she read about. She developed a talent for planning vacations throughout most of the United States. She knew every historical marker along the way and carried an AAA book for every location. Her fondest trip was to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She and JY drove through Mexico to Guatemala and back in the late 1970s. They also visited JY’s favorite country, Belize.
As she gained grandchildren, she often entertained them on vacations or trips shopping, local sightseeing or to the Galveston area beach. Their friends were also welcomed to her home. She soon became known as “grandma” to all the grandchildren’s friends.
Jackie is preceded in death by her husband JY Johnson, her mother, Marie and father Jack Compton, brothers Danny, Ronald, Donald, and most recently on August 22nd, Landy Compton, and son Terry Johnson.
She is survived by a daughter Deborah (Michael), and their children, son Micah Hunt (Laura), and their children, Trevor, Hannah, Adalynn; and their daughter Amy Leverett (Brian) and their children Isabella, Sophia and Malachi; Jackie’s son Larry; and Jackie’s youngest daughter Sharon Barnard, her son Robert Kendrick and her daughter, Jackie (Amber) and son Brycen. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and cousins
