Meleta Jo Stephens passed peacefully from this life on February 4, 2018 with her loving family by her side. Meleta was born on July 16, 1944 in Chickasha, OK to James and Olivet (Young) Cook. She was raised in OKC and she married Bob Stephens in 1961. She spent many years working as a claims rep for American Fidelity. In 1979, Meleta and Bob relocated to Newalla, OK where they lived until moving to OKC in 1999. Meleta accepted a position as a greeting card stocker with Hallmark and she traveled to Walmart stores all around central OK before retiring in the late 2000’s.
Meleta was a kind woman with a servant’s heart. She spent many years volunteering at her church mission as well as the City Rescue Mission. She was generous with her time and resources and was often considered a confidant to her close friends due to her wisdom and her willingness to love people uncondionally and without passing judgement. She enjoyed watching her grandkids, sewing, gardening, and her weekly lunch dates with her three best friends.
Anyone who knew Meleta knew that her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She would share her faith with anyone and everyone who would listen. She was a longtime member of Grace Place Baptist Church in Newalla where she led Awana’s and volunteered in the nursery. In 2000 she began attending Graceway Baptist Church where she also taught Awana’s, worked in the Nursery, and taught a children’s Sunday school class.
Meleta loved her family dearly and was never happier than when she was surrounded by her husband, kids, and grandkids. She was a loving wife, a caring mother, a proud grandmother, and a trusted friend and she will truly be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Mac Cook. She is survived by her husband and soulmate Bob Stephens of OKC; two children: Randy Stephens of OKC and Gailene Clark and husband Mike of OKC; three grandchildren: Whitney Allen and husband Mitch, Matt Clark, and Taylor Clark; great grandchildren Wyler and Covington Allen; three siblings: Dixie Howery, Jerry Cook, and Milton Cook; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
