Muquaddim Karim, born Henry Lee Gaines Sr., departed this life leaving behind a legacy of faith, wisdom, and generosity that touched countless lives. He was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to his loving parents Ruby Gaines and Frank Gaines. One of twelve children, he grew up in a lively, close-knit household where he learned early the values of family, resilience, and community. He attended Dunbar Elementary and later Douglas High School, forming friendships and memories that stayed with him throughout his life.
Guided by a deep spiritual calling, Mr. Gaines embraced Islam and devoted himself to studying and teaching the Holy Qur’an. His commitment to faith led him to adopt the name Muquaddim Karim; a reflection of the spiritual path he walked with sincerity and conviction. He spent many years sharing the teachings, wisdom, and discipline of Islam with those around him, always striving to uplift others.
Muquaddim was married twice. His first marriage to Pamela Akerson blessed him with three children: Henry Lee Gaines Jr., Rodney Gaines, and Tamara Gaines. He later married Rita Cox, who embraced the name Salaam Karim, and together they welcomed their daughter, Khalifa Karim and Anjail Karim. His children were his pride, and he cherished every moment spent with them, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren.
Affectionately known as “Mook,” he was a friend to many, often the first to offer a helping hand, a warm meal, or a listening ear. He shared freely, not only his possessions but also his hard-earned wisdom, his humor, and even his imperfections. Those who knew him understood that his heart was as expansive as his faith.
He is survived by his four children, Henry Jr., Rodney, Tamara, and Khalifa, along with three stepchildren, Jolly, Jacob, Keke, and Dee Dee Dirden. His legacy continues through his thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each carrying a piece of his spirit forward.
Muquaddim Karim will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his generosity, his honesty, and the love he held for his family. His presence will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he gave will endure.
May he rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
