Verna Ruth Meyers passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 21, 2012, with the same class, grace and dignity with which she lived her life. Ruth was born on November 27 to Ralph A. and Nina Bell Steinpfad in Clinton, Oklahoma. She graduated from Capitol Hill High School while working part-time in the retail business in which she grew to love. Ruth then attended the University of Oklahoma and set a goal for owning her own women’s clothing store, beginning her career as a buyer at both Kerr’s Department store and later as V.P. of Balliets. Ruth’s dream was realized in 1975 when she opened Ruth Meyers, Inc. in Nichols Hills Plaza. Her amazing energy, enthusiasm, commitment to customer service, and incredible work ethic were evident as she ran Oklahoma City’s most successful women’s boutique until just four years ago. Ruth’s great satisfaction was in dressing and buying for many of Oklahoma City’s prominent women, taking frequent buying trips to New York City and Paris with her customers’ style in mind.
Ruth received many honors including Journal Record Corporate Woman of the Year in 1986, the “Woman of Distinction” by the Girl Scout Red Lands Council in 1991 and was a past President of Fashion Group International. She served on various boards including Ballet Oklahoma and the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Ruth was a strong supporter of the community, producing countless fashion shows to benefit charitable causes.
Ruth adored her family and her faith. She enjoyed entertaining, travel, the arts, champagne and she had an unquenchable “passion for fashion.” The family will cherish memories of holidays when Ruth put out all the finery with table settings fit for a king. She felt nothing was too special for her family and friends. Ruth lived by the Golden Rule, believed in positive thinking, never tolerated unpleasant subjects and instilled in her staff the No. 1 rule of retail: “The customer is always right; when in doubt, reread rule No. 1.” Her loyal employees were considered part of her family and she would do anything to help advance them in life and career.
Ruth was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 40 years, Anthony George “A.G.” Meyers, Jr., an infant child Nina Beth Meyers, her parents, sister, Lola Wilson and a grandson Gordon Reed Irwin III. She will be greatly missed and is survived by her five children: George Walker Wilson and wife, Pam of Houston TX; Ricki Caudill of Foreman AR; Linda Fitzgerald and husband, Harley of Malakoff Anthony G. Meyers III and wife, Beth of Edmond OK; and Christopher K. Meyers and wife, Debi of Oklahoma City; thirteen grandchildren, Korie Coultas, Cathy LeCompte, Doug Wilson, Nick Wilson, Rendell Irwin, Dana Duffy, Jennifer McCrossin, Cameron Meyers, Caleb Meyers, Mitchell Meyers and Max Meyers; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to caregivers, Debbie and Pete Garrett and Patricia Carter-Myles for the loving care and devotion they showed Ruth over the past several years.
Following a private burial, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Nichols Hills. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Children’s Hospital Foundation or Christ the King Catholic Church.
