Sue D. (Carolyn) Hood passed away peacefully on September 19, 2024, at the age of 91, after a brief illness. She was born in Oklahoma City in 1933 to Earl and Gladys Derhammer. After moving and living several years in Ohio, her family moved back to Oklahoma City where her father spent most of his career as controller for Mideke Supply Company. Sue attended Taft Junior High and then Classen High School where she
served on the student council and pep club. She graduated in the Class of 1951 and then attended Oklahoma A&M University where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta. In college, she made many lifelong friends with whom she remained close until her death. She remained a lifelong OSU sports fan (both Cowboy and Buckeye). Following college, Sue took a job at Oklahoma Natural Gas in the bookkeeping department where she honed accounting skills that would serve her well for the rest of her life.
As a young and beautiful single working woman, Sue had many suitors but she gave her heart to a shy and serious, but fun loving, young medical student named Billy Hood. They married in 1954 and had a loving and supportive marriage that lasted 59 years. After medical school, Sue and Bill spent a year of internship in Rochester, Minnesota. Bill then fulfilled his duty to the US Army serving as a physician to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe in Paris, France, where they lived for four years from 1962-66. In France, Sue made lifelong friends, both French and Americans living in Paris. She and Bill were exposed to and came to love the Parisian lifestyle, full of art, good food, wine and travel. Their experiences shaped their future lives forever. Sue and Bill had four children, Andy, Henry, Michael and Christina (Tetene), the latter of whom was born in Paris. Upon the family's return to the States in 1966, Sue and Bill settled in Nichols Hills where they resided for the rest of their lives. Sue became very involved in Bill's medical practice, managing his office. She also was deeply engaged in her children's education and activities. She served as Treasurer for the Cub Scout troop at Nichols Hills Elementary School though when she started, she knew very little about Scouts. She was instrumental in the creation of the annual Theta Flaming Festival and served as its treasurer for the decades to come. When her
children started attending Casady School, she and Bill became devoted supporters of the school and its faculty, eventually establishing the Geneva Hood Award, which honors an outstanding teacher every year.
Sue had a close relationship with her in-laws and her nieces and nephews and their children. For years, her Ardmore in-laws, Martha Anna and Gene Hill, were often her favorite traveling companions. Sue was a
devoted mother and grandmother and loved to cook. She was known for her tasty soups which she was always quick to simmer and deliver to anyone in need. Her French onion soup was legendary, always best
served the day after. Following Bill's death in 2014, and in the latter years of her long and wonderful life, Sue enjoyed keeping up with her grandchildren, spending time with her beloved poodle, Beau, playing
mahjong with her friends and entertaining her family at the Holidays. Sue is predeceased by her father and mother, Earl and Gladys Derhammer, in-laws, John and Geneva Hood, brother-in-law Gene Hill, sister Pat Adams, niece Shannon Adams, husband J. William Hood, M.D., her sister-in-law, Martha Ann Hill, and grandson Parke Anthony Metzer. She is survived by her sons, Andrew William Hood (Elaine), Henry John Hood (Laura), Michael Lester Hood (Sylvia) and daughter Tetene (Steve) Meltzner and her grandchildren, Emily Hood, Carter Hood, Sydney Hood Collins (Will), Emory Hood, Maggie Hood, Lexie Hood Young (Phillip) and Olivia Metzer. Also, her nieces and nephews: Steve Hill, Julie Hill McNeil (Chuck), Laura Hill Peraino (Vito), Sue Lynn Huckel (Wayne), John Adams (Jeannine) and several great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Casady School or the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. The family intends to honor Sue at a family-only graveside service in the near future.
