Alice Elizabeth Spence Oliver, age 96, passed away on June 26, 2019 at Southern Care in Franklin, Tennessee.

Alice was preceded in death by parents, Jack Childress Spence, Sr. and Anna Driescher; sisters, Ann Spence West and Nancy Spence; brother, Jack Childress Spence, Jr.; and husband, John L. Oliver, Sr.

She is survived by children: Richard (Natalie) Oliver, St. Pete Beach, FL; Spence (Judy) Oliver, Franklin; John (Lynn) Oliver, Hartsville; Judy (Wes) Riegelmann, Otis, OR; and Jack (Margot) Oliver, Franklin; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.

Alice was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1923. After spending the first three years of her life there, she moved with her family to Tennessee, he father’s birthplace. Alice grew up in the small community of Mt. Juliet, where her parents operated the Hermitage Motel on Highway 70.

Following WWII, Alice operated the Village Beauty Shop in Donelson, where she met her husband, John, when he came by the shop to sell advertising for his newspaper, the "Donelson Diary."

Together, Alice and John operated the paper and raised their children, Richard, Spence, Johnny and Judy in Donelson until moving to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1959. Her last child, Jack, was born there.

Alice and John retired to Leesburg, Florida in the 1970’s. After John’s death, she returned to Tennessee to spend time with her family and to look after her mother, spending time in Buchanan and Hartsville, Tennessee, before moving to Franklin.

Alice was an accomplished Contract Bridge player, having earned the points to be awarded a “Life Master.” Always athletic, she played basketball in high school, golf in Florida and was an avid Braves fan.

Private Graveside Services will be held at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Alice’s memory.
