I cannot begin to count the memories I have of my Aunt Carol. The trips to her home in Nashville are the best. Between her and Uncle Jerry a girl couldn't help but feel loved. Your gone from my life but live on in my heart.

Thanks for your unconditional never wavering love and support.  I am lost in my life without you. The memories I will always have. The priceless things you taught me. The love you gave me was the best a boy could ask for.  If ever asked I am always left thinking what would grandma do or say. So I only say nothing and smile

Mama, your unconditional love is with me every day! The memories we created are so comforting ,The adventures we shared as mother and son are treasured. I miss your beautiful smile and that special way you loved each of us with all your heart and soul. I am forever grateful for the blessing of  having such an exceptional mother and best freind. Heaven has you now, and we had to say good bye. I love you and miss you mama , we will be together another day. Stay in peace.

God called you home on January 7th, mom you have left us with wonderful memories. You are a loving caring wonderful lady and mom. My Heart is breaking, My Soul is torn, and My life is forever changed on January 7th I lost my best friend, my mentor, my rock, my buddy, and my wonderful caring and much much loved mother keep me and my family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through the grieving process.

This is the eulogy that was spoken at my Aunt Carol's service.  I thought others might enjoy reading the tribute to her.
Thank you for being here today, it means much to the family that you are here, and Aunt Carol would have enjoyed this celebration.  On behalf of the family I would like to thank all of the medical staff at the hospital, friends, neighbors, family members and anyone else who has helped in the recent days.  
Leo Buscaglia once said, “Love is life and if you miss love, you miss life and all those who knew my Aunt Carol knew that she never missed out on love.  My dear aunt was an extraordinary person: humble, unselfish, and a caregiver for others.  
Carol Siegfried Fortner was born on November 24, 1936, in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois.  Aunt Carol was the second child of Emil Paul Siegfried and Marguerite A. Siegfried.  She had one brother, Larry Siegfried (Vera) and four sisters Maxine L. Martin (George), Kay Frances Bivens (Jack), Margo Asselmeier (Herman), and Janet Sue Schroeder (John).
It may be easy for many of us, used to thinking of Aunt Carol as a woman in her seventies to forget what she must have been like as a vulnerable, newborn baby girl.  And yet, of course, that is exactly what she was.  According to her siblings, Aunt Carol was often called Kye-Key because the younger children couldn't pronounce Carol.  Even as a young child, Aunt Carol was a protector of her younger sisters, especially Janet and stories are told of how Carol would spoil her rotten.  If Janet didn't want to do something then Carol would run with her to the barn so she could get out of doing her task.  Everyone tells stories of happy childhood memories of going next door to their Great- Grandmother's house and eating sugar cookies every day.
So this busy fun loving family shaped Aunt Carol's attitudes for her later life.  She liked to be first and in competing with five siblings, the others claim she was bossy and they often nicknamed her “Aunt Eleanor” after an elderly bossy maiden aunt who wore diamond rings on every finger even before it was fashionable to do so.  Nevertheless, this bossiness set the stage for a woman who grew up to be lively, fun loving and fiercely loyal to her family.  With her in your corner cheering you on – you could whip any tornado that came along. 
Later, when Aunt Carol entered the work force and any time she worked outside her home, she always chose a helping profession whether in a hospital or in a nursing care setting.  She was always serving others.
 Aunt Carol had many friends over the years and she always shared her friends with the family.  Her fierce devotion to family spread to all of her sisters and brother as evidenced by the wonderful fun memories of our annual family reunions that four generations now enjoy.  Each generation has come to love her biscuits and gravy, along with the best chocolate chip cookies and chex mix.
Aunt Carol loved music and one her favorite artists was Loretta Lynn.  She lived her life like the words to one of Loretta's songs entitled, “High on a Mountain Top”.  The song states:  “We live, we love, and we laugh a lot; Folks up here know what they got; High on a mountain top.” 
Aunt Carol was one of those figures so prominent in my life that I do not recall my first memory of her, the same way I do not recall my first memory of the sky, or the sun, or hunger, or thirst.  Aunt Carol radiated her love and her joy as effortlessly as a mirror projects a reflection.  She was one of those people you could know instantly – what you see is what you get – however she never failed to surprise with her sharp wit or charming look or a quick comment on something you had absolutely no idea that she would even notice.
Even though Aunt Carol was born in the north in Illinois, she was a Southern Lady.  I've heard it said that growing up southern is a privilege, really.  It is more than where you're born—it's an idea, a state of mind that seems imparted at birth.  It is more than loving fried chicken, sweet tea, high school football, beer, and acoustic guitars.  It is about being hospitable, being devoted to front porch rockers, sun shine and each other.  Aunt Carol was very much a Southern Lady.  
As you would expect, one relationship, which was central to Aunt Carol's life on this earth, was the one she enjoyed with Uncle Jerry.  According to her siblings, she had her choice of suitors alright; however, she was fascinated with my Uncle Jerry.  They met at school and were married in June 1956 and together they started a loving family with their three children, Jeri Lyn, Rick and Jeff whom Aunt Carol cared for, loved deeply and was so proud of.  
Aunt Carol loved Uncle Jerry with all of her heart.  She waited on him hand and foot.  Shortly after my husband and I were married, we came to Nashville to visit them.  Of course Aunt Carol was busy the entire time cooking up the greatest batch of barbecued pork and cornbread.  My husband, Bill, loves to eat even more than Uncle Jerry did.  Bill was closely watching as she was puttering around I was watching Bill admire just how much Aunt Carol was doting on Uncle Jerry.  This worried me a little and I knew that I would have to quickly squelch that crazy notion forming in his head.  There was no way I wanted him to get any ideas that I would ever be waiting on him hand and foot like that.  I quickly told the entire group as we sat at the dining room table that he would need to wipe that silly grin off his face because I would not ever be waiting on him like that. Uncle Jerry and Aunt Carol both laughed so hard and Uncle Jerry said there was only one of my Aunt Carol and after her they broke the mold.  I was really relieved – that I would not have to do that as a new wife, but Bill quickly came back with his reply and I quote, “Well could you at least learn to cook like your Aunt Carol?”  Unfortunately for my husband, even after 32 years of marriage, I still can't cook but he certainly can.  I did learn to make cornbread though. 
Aunt Carol truly loved people the way that Jesus loves people – from the core of her being.  Her selflessness was evident in her care for others – she gave and gave and gave. And then she gave again.  She treated all people with dignity and respect.  There are countless ways that Aunt Carol served Jesus through serving others – from rides to events, to baking, to cuddling babies, to teaching, to listening; the list goes on and on!
Aunt Carol was passionate about so many things including her family, dancing, gardening and taking care of others, and this was never clearer than when we would all watch Aunt Carol and Uncle Jerry dancing.  They looked so graceful as they danced around the floor.  They floated to some songs and then lit up the dance floor with “Rocky Top Tennessee.” 
My aunt had a way of making other people feel special themselves.  If you remember the way that she looked at you when you spoke with her and the way that she listened intently to everything that you said to her – you know.  She really cared.  She knew the people that she came across in her daily life by name – neighbors, receptionists, butchers, florists – and she usually knew something about them all because she took the time to converse with them and to get to know them.  She was thoughtful.  She would call to make sure you were all right.
I felt honored when I was asked to speak today and in gathering memories from other family members; many said to me:  Aunt Carol was full of life – feisty – and fun.  When she walked in a room, you knew.  To me, it was like someone turned a light on when she arrived.  She had a wonderful smile and a laugh that couldn't help but elicit laughter from others.  My favorite laughs were the ones that seemed virtually uncontrollable.  She had a knack for recounting stories and would quickly have us all in stitches.  She loved children and children loved her back because she was so much fun.  You could never tell her age because she was always on the floor playing with the children.  She had a special relationship with her animals, as well as with the pets of others, especially the neighborhood goats and critters.
As you know, Aunt Carol had been ill off and on for some time, and so the end, when it came, was a shock while not entirely unexpected, relieving her as death does of her pain. We can perhaps take comfort that she was living a full life until very near the last days.  
On the day of her death, her niece Kimberly received a card from her in the mail wishing her to get well as she undergoes her cancer treatments.  This was so typical of Aunt Carol still taking care of others.  We all know that every person dies, but not every person really lives.  Aunt Carol really lived. 
Many questions came to mind while preparing my first attempt at a eulogy.  In talking to others, not one person was really concerned with how Aunt Carol died, everyone was eager to tell me how she lived.  No one was interested in telling me what she gained in life but many had scores of stories to relate about how much she gave.    So it was quickly obvious that these units are really the measure of one's worth.  No one discussed what her church or faith was however; stories flowed about those she befriended when they were in need.  
Aunt Carol was always ready with a word of good cheer that could bring back a smile and could banish our tears.  So I learned again from my aunt as I cut and pasted these words and stories together for today that it was not important what the sketch in the newspaper or even what I would say, what is really important as I know from the stories being told and from the numerous people who have passed through that what is really important is those that were sorry when she passed away.
Now I would like to talk especially to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.   Over the past few days, I know things have been sad and your insides might have felt jumbled.  These feelings are part of what we feel when someone leaves us, especially someone as important as your grandmother.  I would like to tell you a story about the next place where Grandmother has gone.  Your grandmother has gone to a place that is as peaceful and familiar as a sleepy summer day and yet it isn't anything like any place where she has ever been or seen or even dreamed of.  Your grandmother is gliding past the rainbows and once she is there she will be absolutely free of the things that she held onto and that were holding onto her while she was here.  
Your Grandmother will finally be perfect, without a flaw.  Grandmother will travel there empty-handed, as there will not be a single thing that she collected in all of her collections in her life that she would want to bring – except – the love of those who loved her and the warmth of those who cared.  
Your grandmother is taking the happiness and memories and the magic that you and she shared with her.  When she gets to where she is going, all the family and friends that she has ever known along with Jesus will embrace her and the circle of their spirits will shine brighter than the sun.  So when you see the bright sunshine you will know that Grandmother is there.
So, in the next few days ahead, you have a very important job to do; you will need to make your memory.  
Making a memory of Grandmother is easy; all you do is find something that reminds you of Grandmother and then think about what Grandmother liked to do with you.  Then each time you look at your something of Grandmothers, you will have your perfect memory to celebrate her life and her love.
As a teacher, I tend to get long winded so I only have one more quote from Julie Burchill that says, “Tears are sometimes an inappropriate response to death.  When a life such as my Aunt Carol's has been lived completely, successfully, or just absolutely with love, then the correct response to death's perfect punctuation mark is not tears but a smile.”
To Jeff, Nan, Rick, Terry, Sis, and Wendell and the rest of the family – death ends a life, not a relationship – hold tight to each other and Hang Tough.  I Love you and thank you.

Words can never express the hole in our hearts.  My friends whom recently met Aunt Carol best described her as someone you instantly fell in love with.  Always the life of the party.  My prayers will be with Sis, Rick and Jeff and their families to carry on the way their mamma would want them to.

Simple words could not begin to describe my Aunt Carol.  She was such a fun person always the life of the party.  When my friends met her this past spring they shared how you immediately fell in love with her.  My prayers will be with Sis, Rick and Jeff and there families in these days that are to follow without this bright light. Love you all very much.

I cherished the time I spent with Carol, enjoying her kindess, her humor and her love of life,  While now she rest in the arms of her Lord, her light will shine for generations to come.

Ricky, I am so very sorry to hear about your Mother's passing!  My prayers will be for you and your family during this time of loss.  Although I didn't get to meet her, she had an amazing son who I have been privileged to work with.  God Bless you and your family

Maw and I spent many days working together. She gave 110% to everything she did.  Always smiling and cutting up, even when she was threatening to "whip you".  I will cherish her memories forever and pray that God would comfort the family at this time.

Carol was a blessing who came into my life six yrs ago. She was a never ending person to love for just who she had been.my memories with her will be spoke of  everywhere i go.  I promise to smile from hear to heaven just as long as you give me a sign you are with me. I LOVED YOU FROM DAY ONE. And will carry you in my heart for always "maw" lots of love mandy

For so many years I called you Grandma and to this day I know no other name but that.  You were very special lady and will be truly missed by all that you touched.  I know that grandpa and Sarah are happy to have you home and will take care of you from here.
To the family, my prayers and thoughts are with you.  Please be strong and know that Grandma is in a happier place now with other loved ones we truly miss.

I have no words for how I feel right now there's no words to describe an angel like you. You were the light of so many lives. You were my hero. I promise to visit often and bring Kayton because I know how much he ment to you. I will also tell him all about you because only then he can believe in angels because for a short time he was graced with the presence of a perfect angel. I don't know yet how to go on without you the jingling of the ice in your glass, you singing, you playing with Kayton. These memories I will cherish forever. Grandma, I already miss you so bad its crazy. I still cant believe you are gone I know your in a better place and your happy and also at peace. I know your with Grandpa and Sarah and your just having a good ole time! Its gonna be hard to live in your spirit because you were such a kind, loving, strong, beautiful woman and I dont know how I could ever be as strong as you. Just know that I'm going to tell Kayton all about you when he gets older I want him to know how much you truely loved him and how much you really wanted to see him grow up. You were the world to many people and you will still live within our hearts forever. Even though you may have left the earth I know your still watching us. I know that part of me wishes you were still here but part of me knows you arent suffering any longer. I promise to visit you often and bring Kayton to see you often because I know how much you loved him. I havent figured out how I'm going to live without you just the jingling of your ice in your glass and you dancing and singing so vibrantly. Its the little things I will miss the most. You ment the world to me and I know Grandpa waited 10 years to meet you again and I know it was his turn but I still wish you were here..Nobody will ever replace you in my heart and I will always have the good memories...Your my gaurdian angel and always will be and even when you were here on earth you were my angel....I will forever miss you and forever love you Grandma but I know you will be watching over me as the days go by.
