Born on December 13, 1944, in Madison, Tennessee, Floyd was a devoted husband to Judith Donaldson Johnson and a loving father to Staci Musselman, Craig Smither, and Jeffrey Smither.
Floyd was known for his remarkable work ethic and unwavering commitment to any task he undertook. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Tennessee Tech before joining the United States Army, where he served as a Signal instructor during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he dedicated 44 years to the Tennessee Valley Authority, working as an electrical engineer. During his tenure, he was also elected to serve on TVA’s Retirement Board.
Outside of his career, Floyd was passionate about woodworking and was constantly engaged in one project or another around the house. He had a love for James Bond action films but equally enjoyed Hallmark Christmas movies—watching them year-round.
In his later years, Floyd cherished traveling with his beloved wife, Judy. Whether exploring the country or venturing abroad, he was never happier than when in “vacation mode”—and he had a remarkable talent for packing more into a car than anyone thought possible.
Floyd will be remembered as a kind, generous, and fun-loving man who made a lasting impact on everyone he met. He always went the extra mile to bring joy to those he loved.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Judith; his children, Staci Musselman and her husband Theodore, Craig Smither and his wife Lara, and Jeffrey Smither and his wife Janie; his granddaughters, Alex, Abby, and Beth; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his siblings, Joan Cunningham and Ernest Johnson, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Geneva and James Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. CST at Hermitage Memorial Gardens, 535 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, Tennessee 37138. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
