He was born in New London, CT on February 23, 1940.
Charles joined the Navy in 1958 after graduation from New London High and studied to be an electronics technician. This led to a wonderful career at Electric Boat until his retirement in 2003.
He met Lynn through his brother Denny’s wife, and married in September of 1963. They moved to Old Lyme where they spent the rest of their lives raising three sons and welcoming many grandchildren.
Charles, affectionately nicknamed “Buck” by his grandchildren, was a New York Yankees fan, and never missed a UConn women’s basketball game on TV. Buck loved the water and sailed with family since his youth, and spent many days fishing with his sons and tubing with his grandchildren. He loved playing golf with family and friends, and always enjoyed attending the PGA tournament in CT. He was quick to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors, and even quicker to make a reservation when it was his turn to plan a family meal.
He leaves behind his children Charles Smith Jr (Carolyn), Timothy Smith (Kimberley). As well as seven grandchildren, Patrick, Christopher, Nicholas, Morgan, Cabot, Caitlin, and Greyson. He also leaves behind his sister in-law Laura Conley (Rick) as well as many cousins, and his special companion Maria Purdue.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Lynn and his son Thomas.
A funeral service for Charles will be held at Christ the King Church Old Lyme on May 3, 2025 at 9:00am with a graveside ceremony to follow. All friends and family are welcome.
