Born to Edward and Gladys Gumkowski of Enfield, Connecticut, David’s life was defined by love, dedication, and a deep commitment to his family.
He pursued his education at the University of Connecticut (UConn), earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in aerospace engineering.
David spent his professional career at the Underwater Sea Lab in New London, Connecticut, where he worked until his retirement in 2000.
His career took him around the world visiting countries such as Scotland, Spain, and Italy. Yet, no matter how far his work led him, David always returned home with a heart focused on his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Gladys Gumkowski; his brothers, Michael and Gerald Gumkowski; and his granddaughter, Sophia Margiotta.
David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fay Gumkowski (Noble); his brother, Edward Gumkowski Jr.; his children, Lisa Mills (Ken), Michael Margiotta (Christine), and Guy Margiotta (Melissa); seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece.
David’s hobbies included cooking, gardening, frequent trips to the library, and lifelong learning.
Whether taking on home construction projects, repairing cars, preparing Thanksgiving dinner, or making his legendary pizza, David approached everything with care, precision, and pride.
His love for these hobbies was surpassed only by his desire to make his family happy.
He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and devotion along with cherished memories for all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life will be held in the fall to honor and remember David.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Sophia Rose Margiotta Foundation in David’s name. All donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
