Born in Keene, NH, to Joseph Plummer Knox and Ruth Mae Phillips, she grew up in Edgewood, RI, before the family moved to Harwich Port, MA. She earned an associate’s degree from Boston University’s School of Practical Arts and Letters in 1952.
Later that year, she married George Clinton Putnam, with whom she had three children. While George served in the U.S. Navy, they lived on Guam for two years with their first child, Stephen (born 1953 in Worcester, MA). They later moved to Norfolk, VA, then Jacksonville, FL, where Jonathan was born in 1956 at the Navy hospital. The family settled in Southington, CT, where daughter Lisa was born in 1960.
In Southington, they bought and lovingly restored an early 1800s Federal-style farmhouse, doing most of the work themselves and revitalizing the gardens. The home was featured on local historic society tours. There, Debbie began designing clothing, painting in oils, and playing the organ. She was active in the Plantsville Congregational Church and served as president of the Southington Women’s Club in 1964.
Yearning for life by the water, they moved to Old Lyme, CT in 1980, enjoying sailing, tennis, golf, and frequent beach visits. George passed away in 1984 at age 54. Deb remained an avid golfer and tennis player at Old Lyme Country Club and Black Hall Club and took classes at the Old Lyme Art Academy.
In 1989, she married Richard Macrae Warren. They divided time between Old Lyme and New Vernon, NJ. She was a working member of the New Vernon Garden Club.
After retiring, they moved to Naples, FL, in 1998. Deb cherished weekly beach time, watching the gulls and solving crosswords. Her church, First Presbyterian of Naples was central; she served diligently on the mission committee for years.
She moved to Covenant Living in Cromwell, CT in 2018 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by both husbands, George and Richard, daughter-in-law Joline, grandson Adam (Putnam side), and stepson Dwight (Warren side).
She is survived by her three children, Stephen Putnam of Niantic, CT, Jonathan Putnam (Vicki) of Cromwell, CT, Lisa Chasko (Greg) of East Haddam, CT, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Through Richard Warren she is survived by his children Richard
(Christine), John (Brenda), Bill (Liz), plus eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Covenant Living of Cromwell for providing excellent care and comfort during her time there.
A memorial service will be held at a future date in the spring at the Old Lyme Congregational Church. Details to come later.
