Niantic- IRVING FRANZ OERTEL, 95, formerly of Mississippi, currently of Old Lyme, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Bride Brook Health Center. He was born August 31, 1920 in New Haven, Ct. The son of Erich and Anna (Rasmussen) Oertel.
He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Billie Smith Oertel in 2003, and son Billy Erich Oertel in 1996.
He honorably served our country in the US Marines 6th Division in the Pacific Theater in WWII receiving the Purple Heart and many other distinguished service metals. He was a long time Mason in the Day Spring Lodge #30 in Hamden.
He enjoyed his career as a carpenter and licensed electrician working with Albert Swanson Construction and later in life working for himself.
Mr. Oertel is survived by his daughter Doris Ann Recor (Robert) of Old Lyme and grandchildren Robert Recor, Jr., Jonathan Recor, Joseph Eric Oertel (Valerie), great-grandchildren Curtis Recor, Traci Recor, Dylan and Jake Oertel.
Services will be private. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme is handling the arrangements.
