OLD SAYBROOK - Marie A. (Gallo) Nigro, devoted wife of the late Michael A. Nigro, and beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 91 years old.
Marie was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on January 20, 1927, to Sebastian and Vincenza (Gionfriddo) Gallo. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy and later married Michael A. Nigro of Hartford in 1950. Together they raised their family in Wethersfield not far from their restaurant, Pippie’s, a legendary Italian eatery that she owned and operated alongside her husband and family members for 49 years.
Marie is survived by her loving children, Linda Muratori and her husband Raymond of Old Saybrook, Kenneth Nigro and his wife, Darha, of Simsbury, adored grandchildren, Raymond Muratori, Jr. and his partner Andrea, Janelle Maczonis and her husband, Aaron, Michael Nigro and Zachary Nigro, and four great-grandchildren, Madison, Leonardo, Verona, and Eloise Marie, as well as several nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents, and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Tina and her brother Joseph Scata.
A true matriarch, she led by example. Marie exhibited unlimited energy and a strong work ethic and inspired the people around her to excel and be happy. Her many lessons of love, family and faith were shared with all who had the privilege of knowing her. One way that Marie expressed her love was through her cooking. She found great joy in nourishing her loved ones through the meals she prepared and could always be seen in the kitchen creating favorite specialties.
Her life was filled with love, generosity and optimism and a great passion for life. She took pride and enjoyment caring for her flower gardens in the seaside community of Old Saybrook.
We would like to express our deepest thanks to her doctors and entire staff at Hartford Hospital CB2 and to Masonicare Hospice Home Health Care for their care and compassion.
