Nancy Joanne Klomp Greaves, born on December 9, 1947, in Yonkers, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. She was the beloved wife of Harry Greaves, with whom she shared 55 wonderful years in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
Nancy was the daughter of Johan Klomp, originally from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Carol Odell Klomp, born in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.
She is survived by her siblings Rebecca Riggio (Gary) of Ivoryton, CT, and Betsy Rumplik of Adams, MA; half-siblings Johanna Coburn (James) of Wethersfield, CT, and Jan Klomp (Joanne) of Ivoryton, CT; and step-siblings Karen Munson of Florida and Carl Munson (Alice) of Ohio.
Nancy was a loving aunt to Ashley Riggio (David Adamji) and Kara Riggio (Matt Wolfe), both of Chicago, and Christina Riggio (Ronnie Reyes) of NYC. She was a proud great-aunt to Caleb, Isaiah, and Naomi Adamji; Ezra, Georgia, and Hazel Wolfe; and Rainier and Raziel Reyes.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Robert Klomp; her brother-in-law, Robert Rumplik; and her step-sister, Linda Munson.
Nancy had a deep love for Christmas, especially Dutch Christmas, which she celebrated in honor of her father and extended Dutch family. She was an avid reader, skilled gardener, and could identify many birds by their songs.
Due to her father’s career, Nancy spent parts of her early life in Ohio and Illinois before settling in Connecticut with her family. Summers were cherished times spent with her maternal grandparents in Wallingford or with great aunts and uncles in Hastings-on-Hudson. She also attended Camp Clare in Hadlyme, CT, a place she fondly remembered.
A graduate of Valley Regional High School, Nancy briefly attended nursing school at Hartford Hospital but quickly realized her path lay elsewhere as she couldn't stand the sight of blood. It was around this time she met her future husband, Harry. Over the years, she worked at Pond’s in Clinton, in the Valley Regional High School office, for her brother’s law office, and alongside Harry at the Florence Griswold Museum.
Nancy had a delightful sense of humor, a generous heart, and a passion for travel. She and Harry enjoyed many cruises together and even lived in Ireland for a time before returning to settle in Old Saybrook.
She especially loved being near the water—whether on a ship, at the beach, or sitting at the shore with a book in hand. Her handbag always held her latest read, and she found great joy in her garden after a long day.
Nancy was deeply loved by her family and friends. Her warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
