

OLD TOWN - Matthew H. Gilman, 60, died peacefully September 29, 2013 at his home with family by his side. He was born February 12, 1953 in Bangor, oldest son of Harold F. and Margaret J. (Ketchen) Gilman.
Matt was a 1971 graduate of Old Town High School. He worked for over 40 years at John T. Cyr & Sons, Inc. Matt was an avid golfer and enjoyed time at camp with family and friends. He was an active member of the Church of Universal Fellowship, where he sang in the choir and participated on several boards. He contributed for 20 years on the Board of Directors for Penobscot County Federal Credit Union. Above all else, Matt was a man of great character who loved and supported his family through boy scouts, music and athletics.
He is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Shelley (Harris) Gilman; two sons Ryan and Christopher Gilman all of Old Town; his mother Margaret Gilman of NC; two sisters Catherine Lavin and her husband Gordon of NC; and Judith Wilcox of Bangor; a brother Richard Gilman and his wife Jill of Hudson; special in-laws Paul and Joyce Harris; Stacey (Gilman) Mishio of Howland; extended family members, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Harold.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Garrett of Cancer Care of Maine and Dr. Chan of Dana-Farber for their exemplary care and compassion in the treatment of his neuroendocrine cancer. Friends may call 6-8PM Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home 438 Main St Old Town. A celebration of his life will be conducted 1PM Saturday at the Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono. Burial will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Care of Maine c/o Healthcare Charities P.O. Box 404 Bangor, ME 04401 or to the Church of Universal Fellowship 82 Main St Orono, ME 04473 to benefit the new roof project.
