Jerry Alexander Spencer of Olive Branch, Mississippi, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021, at the age of 93. Born on January 22, 1928, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to A.A. (Bill) and Hester Ann (Bainey) (née Roberts) Spencer, Jerry and his parents moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi, where he attended high school. Jerry attended Texas A&M University and ultimately graduated from Ole Miss, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, in 1949.
After college, Jerry served in the U.S. Army, where he saw action in Korea between 1950 and 1952. Jerry left the Army as a sergeant, and not long after returning home he met, and soon married, his wife of 67 years, Sue Spencer (née Kern). Jerry spent most of his career working in the oil industry before retiring from the Mississippi Department of Revenue, where he was a Senior Appraiser of Real Estate. Jerry was a man of great and profound faith and was a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jean and brother in law Tony Capps.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sue Kern Spencer, his son David Spencer, of Southaven, Mississippi, and his daughter Susan Spencer Patton (Dave), as well as by his grandchildren, Spencer Patton (Anna) of London, England, Taylor Patton (Jen) of Chicago, Illinois, and Kathryn Patton (Phillip) of Chicago, Illinois, and by one great-grandchild, Cayden Patton.
Jerry lived a life of faith and service to his country and his family. He was not a man of many words, but he never missed an opportunity to tell his family that he loved them, and in so doing he demonstrated for four generations the power and primacy of love in our lives and for one another. Jerry lived a full life, but he will be deeply missed.
A private family graveside service is planned for a later date.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brantleyfuneral.com for the Spencer family.
