Skip attended Memphis State University but left during his junior year to join the United States Air Force at the age of 19. Following his military service, Skip embarked on a distinguished career with the City of Memphis Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring. His dedication to serving others was evident throughout his life.
Upon retirement, Skip traveled with his friend, John Woods, who owned a catering company. They prepared and served food for the tireless workers who were rebuilding homes and churches in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. They also traveled to Canada to cook for the American Consulate and Washington D.C where he even met the Dahli Llama. He shared endless stories of his travels but what stood out most was his servitude and tireless efforts to help others.
Faith was the cornerstone of Skip's life. Raised in the church from an early age, he remained deeply involved in his faith community throughout his years. He was an active member of his church and participated regularly in his Sunday school class. His unwavering love for the Lord guided him and provided strength and inspiration to those around him.
Skip found immense joy in nature and cherished every opportunity to be outdoors. In the spring and summer months, he could often be found on his boat fishing, while fall and winter brought time spent in a deer stand. These activities were not just hobbies but passions that he loved sharing with friends and family.
Skip is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Gail Dunkin; his children: Karen George and her husband, Mark; Glenn Dunkin; Lori Dunkin and William Vogel and his wife, Shelley. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who brought him endless pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Arthur Dunkin, as well as his brother Richard Dunkin.
Skip’s legacy is one of faith, service, love for family, and a profound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held on March 31, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Labelle Haven Baptist Church 4800 MS-305 Olive Branch, MS where his memorial service will follow.
