Virgillia "Jill" Young

Virgillia (Jill) Miller Young, 78, of Olive Branch, MS passed away at Methodist Healthcare Hospice on May 16, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert C. Young, her daughters Gwen R. Gnadt (John Lochren), Denise Buckner, son, Rob Young (Lana), three grandchildren, Brandy Noonan (Jerry), Joshua Thornton, and Ingrid Young and two great-grandchildren, Lexie and Chloe Buynoch. She also has a large extended family. She was born November 7, 1934 as the only child to James and Mary Miller Harris in Alamo, TN. She moved to Memphis upon graduation from high school where she attended the University of Memphis and worked for the Commercial Appeal. She worked at Coleman's drugs, was a teacher's aide for special needs children at Raineshaven Elementary School, a buyer and manger for the Style Shop and ultimately retired as the Personnel Department Manager for Dillard's Department Stores after many years of employment. She was an active member of Maples United Methodist Church where she participated in their Missionary Circle, Knitting Club, Food Pantry and various other charitable groups within the church. She was a charter member of Desoto Athletic Club, a member the Olive Branch T.W.I.G.S. and a former Girl Scout leader. After her diagnosis of ovarian cancer in November 2011, she fought the disease with strength, determination and dignity. She continued to enjoy activities and travel with family and friends. Jill was a caring and compassionate person and even in her last days was more concerned about her death's effect on her family than about her own discomfort. The family prefers, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to be made to either, Maples Memorial United Methodist Church, the Ovarian Cancer Research Society or Methodist Healthcare Hospice. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 18, 5-8 pm, at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch, and a funeral service will be held Sunday, May 19, at 1:30 pm at Maples Memorial United Methodist Church.
