It has been a few days since I came across this sad news of Laynes passing. I fell in love with this wonderful and unique man years ago, we shared a home twice, and many special nights over the years. Special circumstances kept us apart for a long while, I was just on my way to see him when I found out I was too late. These last few days all I can think about is why did I not put my golf balls ahead of my sand....
A professor stood before his Philosophy 101 classand had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large, empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was. So the professor picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar, and the pebbles rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students agreed with a unanimous "yes"! The professor the produced two cans of beer from under the table and proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," the professor said, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents you life. The golf balls are the important things; your family, your health, your friends, your passions. Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full." "The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff! If you put the sandinto the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you spend allyour time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important. Pay attention tothe things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children, grandchildren, Take time for medical check ups, Make time for your friends, play another 18 holes. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house on paint the fence. Take care of the golf balls first - the things that really matter to you. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
At this point you might be wondering what the beer represented. So I will tell you as I think Layne would have agreed..."It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Extra Old Stock!"
I sure will miss you, Layne.

My dear friend Layne.. We shared many great times and you were a true great human.  My sympathy to parents and family.  Myself and others all have amazing memories of this wonderful person.  We all miss you and love you.  Rest well my friend.

"Almost three months have passed as we have learned of the passing of our dear friend... "Layne" and I were roommates for a couple of years here in Quesnel BC and a part of a tight circle of great people and friends! His wit and sardonic humour will be missed by all those who he let into his world and for those fortunate enough to have him a part of theirs! A beer and a book in your honour Layne!

Layne and I shared a classroom table in grade 11 chemistry at Peacock.  That class, although I wasn't too interested in the subject matter, was so enjoyable because of Layne.  He taught me more than the teacher ever could of about what was important in life.  I have thought often about Layne over the years and where he was and what he was doing.  Hearing about his passing has really stopped me in my stride of life.  I'm sorry for the loss of Layne and the pain family and loved ones have to go through.

I just heard. My deepest sympathies to family & Layne's many friends. Layne was always a great friend and will be missed and remembered by many. I will hold our memories close to my heart. Layne pass my love to Tammy & Terri ? Loved u bud ?

I am so sorry to hear of Layne's passing. I have so many great memories of Layne. He touched the hearts of many. He had such an amazing soul and made lasting friendships wherever he went and will not be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend.

Ryan gave us the sad news of Layne's passing.  Our deepest sympathies.  He and Ryan were quite the pair - long-time friends and Layne was a part of our family as they were growing up.  Our kids are not supposed to go first, are they; but when cancer shows up, who's to know.  We are thinking of you at this sad time.
