Edith Vera Nabity was born In Arnsdorf, Germany March 26, 1926, to Eduard and Olga Rinas. Eduard and Olga along with Edith, who was 6 months old, and her older brother, Arno, who was 2 years old, left Germany to start a better life in the United States. Two of Eduard’s brothers had immigrated in 1912 and were farming in North Dakota. Eduard too began farming in the small community of Egeland, ND where Mom’s younger sister, Ruth, and brother, Ervin, were born.
Olga Simon Rinas passed away when Edith was 10 years old and Eduard eventually married Lula Thompson who had been hired to help with the children and household duties. Edith and Ruth helped with some of the farming but mainly with cooking and cleaning duties and the boys helped with the farming. Up until the time of her death, there was no English spoken in the Rinas household as Olga only spoke German.
After graduating high school, Edith attended Interstate College in Fargo, ND. She then taught Kindergarten through 8th grade in a one room schoolhouse in Crocus, ND where she lived with the family of one of her students. No bathroom and no heating meant having to start a fire in the potbellied stove and bring in water each morning before school started.
At 19 years old, Edith decided to join a friend who had moved to Tacoma, WA. She took her best friend, her sister Ruth who was 17 years old with her by train. They had the time of their lives! Edith had a very good, classified job as the administrative secretary for the Judge Advocate General at McChord AFB in Tacoma.
Edith met Frank Nabity at a wedding where Frank was a groomsman and Edith was an attendee. Frank was a pilot in the Air Force and stationed at McChord AFB. They were engaged after two months and then Frank was sent overseas for eighteen months.
After marrying in 1952 while living in Tacoma, Frank was transferred to Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, WA where their first child, Gail, was born.
Frank retired from the Air Force in 1954 and moved the family to Omaha, briefly, while starting a new life as a salesman for an industrial chemical company. Staying with Frank’s parents while building a house in Sioux City, IA, they welcomed their second daughter, Cheryl.
After moving to Sioux City in 1955, they had three more children: Mark, Denise and Jeff. Of note, Frank and Edith had five children in the span of six years and five months. Edith was a fulltime housewife who worked very hard at keeping a spotless house, cooking wonderful meals and seeing that her children always had the nicest clothes to wear. Frank and Edith made sure their children were never idle, keeping them active in church, music, sports, scouting, and other activities.
In 1968 the family moved to Omaha where Edith lived for the balance of her life.
Edith enjoyed watching football, baseball and golf. Edith was an amazing athlete and enjoyed playing many sports. Later in life, she golfed, swam and did daily exercises.
She was greatly loved by her family and will be remembered for her gentle spirit, warm smile, red lipstick and impeccable style.
