After graduating from Omaha South High School in 1950, Ernie enlisted into military service where he was stationed in Japan and served four years in Air Force Intelligence during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge from the military at the rank of Staff Sargent, Ernie worked for the Union Stock Yards in Omaha for 13 years and then in the trucking industry for 30 years before retiring to spend time with family and play a lot more golf. He was a longtime member of The Gold League at Johnny Goodman (Applewood) golf course and truly enjoyed the friendship of all his fellow golfers. Ernie was also a talented bowler, even participating on a team made up of himself, his three brothers, and father which was documented in an Omaha World Herald article titled, "Woster Clan on Warpath," published on December 7, 1962. Ernie was devoted to his family and kept them at the forefront of all that he did throughout his life and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
