What a privilege it was for my brother Paul, my husband John and me in recent years to help Herbert via CD player and CDs to listen to his beloved "church hymns" --hymns of glory and thanksgiving to God. Your description of Herbert is very beautiful, Jack!

My childhood memories were of:  Herbert the iron worker, who built the Peter Kiewit skyscrapers.  And Verl & Barry's domineering father who lived in the city, near the Millard "Mall!"

I remember 6 foot 10 inch Chuck Jura & I, visiting Herbert when we were teenagers.  Herbert pulled out a half gallon of ice cream and a huge butcher's chopping knife.  In one swift "whack" he equally divided the box, then handing each of us one of the two half-cartons with a large spoon.  He must have had plenty practice (starting with Aunt Christine's chickens).

I'm sure Tina, Penny, and Valerie could share pen-pal memories of romantic frankness from an aging, and adventurous widower.

Herbert Blum;-  older cousin, teacher, mentor, protector, curator we are thankful for your inspiration to us all. 

Some 70 and plus years ago, showing us the farm ways - with horses, wagons, tractor, corn cribs and grain bins,
  milking cows and assisting a few thirsty cats in the process, 
 letting us try a corn husking hook on small hands
 and instructing the ear toss against the raised back side of the wagon,
protecting us from the belt powering the threshing machine, 
and rescuing the situation if a gate didn't get closed or if an end gate were opened.

Yes, and some 60 and plus years ago a soldier, defender, protector across the globe.

In this last decade and more, inspiring us with family and community history, walnuts nourishing squirrels throughout the winter, letters and more.

And now and for our tomorrows an even stronger spirit sending strength and solice till we meet again.

Always respected and liked Herb. He was quite a character while I was growing up.The world is a poorer place without his huge heart to lift us all up.I'll miss him. Peace be with you Herb!

Sorry to hear about Herb.  Another one gone from our circle.  The Dills and the Ruhges.

I can't think of one family function where Uncle Herbert didn't have a camera in his hand, and most the time in your face. :)  We appreciated that years later when we had some great pictures to look back on.  Herbert...I'm kinda jealous.  You get to see all our family who went before you.  Give them all a hug for me.

I grew up with Herb living right next door. He loved to tease me and call me Barbie doll.  I always knew he would be there for me and my family if we ever needed him.  He was a fun, kind and generous man.

Herbert has been a surrogate grandfather to my boys ever since he and Unajean agreed to babysit for my oldest when I was in a pickle and Kyle was 6months old. That was 28 years ago and Kyle has a picture of himself age 2 and Herbert lying on the kitchen floor eating icecream on his refridge Herb gave him two years ago. When we moved and our second son, Jared,was 10 months he pointed to his house as we drove by saying "Herbert-Herbert". Countless moments of watching squirrels and cartoons together make lifelong friends. There is no other like Herbert. He will always have a monument in our hearts. Jean, Ron, Kyle and Jared Koliha
