

In loving memory, we celebrate the life of Joan Cherek, who passed away peacefully at her home on April 15, 2026, surrounded by her cherished family. Born on August 11, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska, Joan was a beloved daughter of Dallas and Florence Baker.
Joan grew up in Omaha, with her siblings, Dallas, Bob, Doris, Betty and Genevieve. Her life was filled with love and adventure. This was marked by her marriage to Thomas Cherek, on May 27, 1950, in a beautiful ceremony at Holy Name Church. She would often reminisce about him being the love of her life. Together, they had 7 children (Thomas Jr., Ronald, Donna, Joanne, Randy, Dale and Brian). Thomas and Joan built a nurturing home filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.
She had a lifelong career at Bergan Mercy Hospital, where she dedicated herself to the surgical department. Her career was marked by her exceptional work ethic and genuine care for others. She retired with a legacy of compassion and professionalism that left an indelible mark on her colleagues and patients alike.
Joan was known for her warm smile, playful stubbornness, strategic game play and dynamic character. She had a remarkable gift to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. She was a sanctuary of warmth and laughter.
Joan was proceeded in death by the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Thomas. Also proceeded in death by children Dale, Thomas Jr. and Donna. Siblings Dallas, Bob, Doris, Betty and Genevieve. Joan is lovingly remembered by her surviving children: Ronald (Barb) Cherek, Joanne (Bill) Blair, Randy (Cindy) Cherek, and Brian (Donette) Cherek, who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Her life was further enriched by her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, best friend (Niece) Aunt Carol Thomas and endless number of extended family members and friends, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
As we bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, we take comfort in knowing Joan lived a full and meaningful life. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Brookestone Meadows of Elkhorn for their exceptional love and care during Joan's final years, ensuring her comfort and dignity were always maintained. Joan's life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and being loved by her.
A visitation will be held at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center St, Omaha, Nebraska 68106, on April 30, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and a Funeral Service will take place there on May 1, 2026, at 10:00 am.
