Ken Batchelder of Omaha passed away on April 10, 2014. Ken was born on February 18, 1926 in Omaha to Lee C. and Edith J. Batchelder. He graduated from Central High School in 1943, one year early, and attended Iowa State University before serving in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a cryptographer. He was with the first American forces to enter Berlin after the defeat of Germany and was stationed there for 9 months, first at Tempelhof Airport and later at Potsdam. After being discharged, he returned to ISU where he received his Structural Engineering Degree and met his future wife, Joyce Siede. Ken started his career in Chicago, IL, where he married Joyce, before returning to his hometown in 1952. In 1956, he began a 33-year career at Western Electric as a Project Engineer. He was involved in many activities through the years, including Fast-Pitch Softball, Bowling, Golf, Tennis, Bridge, Kiwanis, District 66 Board, and member of Sunset Valley CC for 50 years. For about 40 years, he was a member of the same bowling team which was profiled in the World Herald in the 80's. At age 40, he started playing tennis, and by age 50 he had teamed with Bernie Anderson to become the #1 ranked "over 45" doubles tennis team in Nebraska for several years. Ken was predeceased by his wife and dance partner of 60 years, Joyce E. Batchelder; and sister Irene G. Schneiderwind. He is survived by 3 sons, Dave (Connie) of Lenexa, KS, Ted (Lynne) of Aurora, CO, and Lee (Nancy) of Charleston, SC; and 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Jansen (Josh) of St. Louis, MO, Nathan Batchelder (Kara) of Monroe, NC, Christie Batchelder of Omaha, and Kyle Batchelder, Lenexa.
