

LaVern proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 12 years. He went on to a career in civil service, retiring as Commissary Director in 1985. Never one to stay idle, he enjoyed a second career with OPS Transportation until his retirement in 2009.
In 1960, LaVern married his beloved wife, Margaret Murphy. Together, they built a family of four children and a lifetime of memories. LaVern had many interests, including music, cars, baseball, golf, gardening, his dogs—Missy, Goldie, and Heidi—along with good food and trips to Vegas. He especially cherished time with his family.
LaVern is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret; children Francis Larson, Michael (Lynn) Larson, Mary Cudney and John (Tammy) Larson; grandchildren Michael, Cassandra, Richard, Alexander (Olivia), Matthew, Cecilia, Joseph, Cole, Rachel, Nolan, Abigail, and Benjamin; and great-grandchildren Norris, Winnifred, and Evangeline. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Pete Schmitz and Joseph (Elie) Murphy, along with many nieces, nephews, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carsten and Emma (Blinn) Larson; brother Richard Larson; sister Mary Schmitz; grandson Nicholas; great-grandson Charles; and brothers-in-law Michael Murphy, James (Margaret) Murphy, and John Murphy.
A visitation for LaVern will be held Thursday, September 4, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service to occur at 7:00 PM.
A funeral mass will occur Friday, September 5, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4810 Woolworth Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska 68106.
LaVern will be laid to rest at Omaha National Cemetery on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 12:30 PM.
