

Born February 11, 1942 in Hartington, NE and died November 20, 2013 in Omaha. Married Carla Thoreson on August 20, 1966 at Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa. Preceded in death by parents, Leonard Henry and Norene Fae (Wiechelman) Gries; brothers, Larry and Elmer; sisters, Donna and Della. Survived by wife of 47 years, Carla; sons, Steve (Crystal), Council Bluffs, Chris (Jill), Omaha; grandchildren, Gabriella Gries, Grant Gries; step-grandchildren, Kenny Swanger, Machella Swanger, Star Ryan; step-great grandchild, Emmalia Swanger; sister, Maxine Marshall (Jim), Council Bluffs, and many loving nieces, nephews, and a whole host of friends. Doug retired from Millard Public Schools working as a maintenance engineer at Millard West High School. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Millard, Miracle Hills Optimist Club, Omaha and served as State Director of Nebraska Good Sam Camping Clubs. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 434 for 8 years. Doug was a loving, kind, gentle and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was an inspiration to many over his lifetime and as he valiantly fought pancreatitis the past year while in the hospital. His passions were his family and camping.
VISITATION Sunday from 5-7pm, Prayer Service at 7pm, at Crosby Colonial Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICE Monday 10:30am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 13271 Millard Ave. Interment at 2pm at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 219th and Maple St, Elkhorn, NE. Memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Millard.
