Born on January 13, 1933, in New Middleton, Tennessee, Mae Mitchell embodied a spirit of tireless dedication and warmth. Her remarkable 40-year journey at Wayne State University began in January 1953 as a student assistant. She hand-delivered mail across campus in a wire basket for 50 cents an hour. Her work ethic was quickly noticed, leading to a promotion in May 1955 and setting the stage for a career defined by loyalty and excellence.
It was within the halls of Old Main that Mae’s personal life truly blossomed through her connection with George Mitchell. Though they first met at Scott Methodist Church, it was a playful encounter on campus—where Mae boldly blocked George’s path to catch his attention—that sparked a lifelong romance. They married in 1956, building a beautiful life together as George pursued his graduate studies and Mae rose through the university ranks. Their partnership was a true team effort, extending even to the bowling alley, where George joined her in three of her four weekly leagues.
Mae’s professional legacy at Wayne State University Detroit MI was one of historic significance and leadership. In 1959, she was one of only six employees to receive an FBI security clearance to process confidential federal mail, and she eventually retired in 1993 as the Mail Department Supervisor. Beyond her career and her impressive 154 bowling average, Mae was the heart of her community—a deeply caring woman who took care of everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of steadfast commitment to the university she helped build and the family she loved beyond measure. She is preceded in death by her mother, Dessie Pearl Moore; father, Jesse James Moore; sister, Cornelia Mary Ann Baker; husband, George Mitchell; and brother-in-law, John Mitchell. Mae is survived by her brother-in-law, Clyde Mitchell, and a host of nieces and nephews.
