It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Edward "Bob" Kocanda, who left us on February 19th, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on July 1st, 1937, to Jerry and Anna Kocanda in Omaha, Nebraska, Bob lived his entire life in South Omaha. He was the oldest living member of his church charter at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, where his deep faith was nurtured from an early age. It was there that he sang proudly in the choir, joined by his wife and children, and later his grandchildren. For many years, Bob generously volunteered his time to the church, lending a hand when concrete work and other tasks needed attention, always doing so without seeking recognition.
Bob served his country honorably in the United States Army, a reflection of his deep love for his country and his admiration for those who served alongside him. As a foreman for the City of Omaha, Bob worked with concrete and helped maintain the streets, a job he took great pride in.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a devoted family man. His family always came first, and he cherished every moment spent with them, whether at sports events, birthdays, holidays, or simply gathering for the weekend. His children and grandchildren often turned to him for guidance, whether to teach them a lesson he’d shared many times before or to offer a helping hand with whatever they needed.
Bob was a man of many passions. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and skiing. The basement of the home he built with pride was adorned with many of his proud hunting trophies. He treasured family ski trips, teaching his loved ones how to navigate the slopes with the same drive that he applied to everything in life. But it was fishing that truly stuck with him, and he spent countless years taking trips to South Dakota, making lasting memories with those who joined him.
A lover of sports, Bob was always engaged in the world of athletics, whether coaching or enjoying Nebraska sports with friends and family. He found joy in friendly bets, and watching games together was a cherished tradition.
Bob was not just a father, husband, and grandfather, but also a true friend to many. His generosity and willingness to help others were qualities that made him beloved by all who knew him. He would lend a hand without hesitation, always ready to give whatever he had, except for a win—he never gave up on the competitive spirit.
Bob’s legacy is one of love, service, and kindness. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Jerry; brothers, Ed, Jerry (Mary), Frank, and Gene (Mary Lou); sisters, Dorothy (Connie), Mary Ellen (Sterling "Dutch"); and twin infant daughters. He is survived by his wife Berni (Sirek); children, Ken, Dave, Brian (Kim), and Julie (Randy); 13 grandchildren, Jacob, Nick (Amanda), Michaela (Jared), Hailey, Brooke (Deven), Jessica, Loren (Abbi), Elliott, John (Sandy), Ryan (Dani), Jason, Brandi (Joe), and Ron (Andrea); 28 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Gwen, Luella, Anita, Ramona, Malea, Declan, Lincoln, Wesley, Austin (Felicia), Kyleigh, Kyerstin, Lucille, Ray, Lathan, Dalton, Janet, McKenzie, Riley, Hunter, Jude, Maddux, Mila, Mireya, Brooke, Ryan, Leyc, and Ollie; sister, Rita (Yudge); many nieces and nephews and friends.
Visitation will take place Friday, February 28, 4-7:30 p.m. with Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. at Westlawn-Hillcrest. A Funeral Service in honor of Bob will be held Saturday, March 1 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 5219 S. 53rd St., Omaha. Burial will take place at Omaha National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Arbor Day Foundation, D.A.V., or Alzheimer's Association.
May Bob rest in peace, knowing his memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
