Violet was born October 17, 1920, daughter of David and Minna Raeder, on a farm near the small town of Van Cleve in central Iowa where her father spent his entire life. She attended all 12 years of school in the same building in Van Cleve, graduating in 1938 with a class of 13. Violet attended Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown, Iowa, and graduated from their secretarial course. After working in a law firm for a year, she then went to work for Lennox Industries where she was hired for $65 a month (which was high since she had some experience). She spent 12 happy years at Lennox as a secretary, several years as head of the steno Pool. Violet met her husband of 70 years, Paul, of Conrad, Iowa, at a dance shortly after he was discharged from the Air Force in January, 1946. They were married on October 20th of that year. She retired a couple months before their son Kim was born in 1953. Daughter Kay was born in 1958 in Atlantic, Iowa where they had moved after Paul had accepted a new position with a locally ownded lumber company. After being in Atlantic for several years, they then moved to Omaha in 1959. Violet became a home typist, addressing correspondence for Boys Town and A-1 Direct Mail for 15 years. She was also extremely activ in Underwood Hills Presbyterian Church, producing the monthly newsletter for 20 years, holding many positions in the women's organizations and sewing countless newborn layette sets for missions. After joining Covenent Presbyterian Church in 1989, she was chairperson of the funeral lunch committee for 13 years, was actice in the women's and couples groups, and enjoyed sharpening the pew pencils for 12 years! She became a fixture at The Ambassador (formerly Haven House). Remarkably, once a month for 45 years (1969-2014), she volunteered her time helping the residents play Bingo and provided the coveted prizes. Violet also enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting, sewing, crafting, and crocheting. During the last 20 years she had sewn and donated 152 lap blankets for care facilities, 26 crib quilts for a pregnancy center and crocheted hundreds of cat mats for the Nebraska Humane Society. Violet is survived by her husband Paul of 70 years, son Kim (Mary) Haws and daughter Kay (Ivan) Gerard, 4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren. As per Violets request, any memorials may be directed to Covenant Presbyterian Church or the Nebraska Humane Society. Violets family would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the staff of South Haven Living Center in Wahoo, Nebraska where Violet resided for the last 13 months. When her Alzheimer's diagnosis required her to receive more extensive care, the staff of South Haven welcomed her with open arms, treating her with respect and providing an exceptional level of care.
