

Leonard E Hartmann of Laurens, NY, died peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Focus Rehabilitation Center, Cooperstown, NY. Lennie was born in Callicoon Hospital, in Sullivan County, Dec 29, 1933, to Beatrice E. (Jensen) and Edward C. Hartmann of Cochecton, NY. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Hartmann of Laurens, and his sister, Linda Krantz of Cochecton ; his children: David & Caroline Hartmann of Scottsville, KY, Barry Hartmann of Citrus Heights, CA , and Angela and Bernard Smith of Fayetteville, NY. by his grandchildren: Stephanie Duke, Jessica Reed, Kayla Hartmann, Justin Hartmann, Michael Hartmann, Jr., Tammy Sines, Nicole Hartmann, Bernard Smith, Jr.; and great grandchildren: Kyla Duke, Wyatt Duke, Skylee Duke, Megen Hartmann, Tia Marie Henderson, Watt Henderson, Jr., Tianna Henderson, Zykel Emanuel Reed, Zy’Mel Emari Reed, Cruz Jackson, Jr., Ashlynn Marie Hartmann, Marie Hartmann, Alyssa Ann Hartmann, Adeline Hartmann, Mike Hartmann Benjamin Hartmann, Gabriel Sines, Gage Sines; and numerous step grandkids and great grandkids, nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael Hartmann, and his grandson, Benjamin Hartmann.
Leonard graduated from Callicoon High School. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1953-1957. He was stationed in Mississippi and England. He spent nearly 3 years stationed abroad. He was an Airman 1st Class serving as a high speed radio intercept. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He has always been a proud American.
Len worked as a machinist most of his life. Lenny found his happiness in technical work. He worked for Ben Alkes in Oneonta in the 80s and 90’s before moving to Clarksville, TN, where he and Mary took a care-taking position at Montgomery County Conservation Club on the Cumberland River. Later he and Mary moved to Scottsville, Kentucky, to live near his son, David, after Lennie’s health issues began to take their toll. He and Mary moved back to New York in 2008.
Len had a keen mind and love of life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He enjoyed many different kinds of music, enjoying classical and contemporary. He was trying to assemble a family history of the Hartmann family when time ran out. Len loved all his family and his friends. Those who knew Len knew he was strong minded and could be soft hearted, serious and fun loving. He will be missed by many.
A Memorial Service with military honor guard will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Laurens Presbyterian Church, officiated by Judith A Gage, CLP. The service will be followed by a reception at the Laurens Fire Hall. Contributions in Leonard’s name can be made to the Laurens Women’s Auxiliary or Susquehanna Animal Shelter, 4841 St. Hwy. 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
