Louis William Stone, affectionately known as “Rocky” or “Papa,” born on September 29, 1937 in Franklin, NY, took his leave on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, NY at the age of 86 years. The son of Elmer and Loretta Stone, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Stone (Mattice), step-sons Jeffrey Cox (Ruth) and Gregory Cox, granddaughters Rachael Ouimet (Andrew) and Olivia Cox, great-grandson Luke Ouimet, nieces Terri Gesell and Linda Huckabee and brother-in-law, George Crawford and family. He was a man of few words with an abundance of love.
Rocky was born and raised in Franklin, NY where he spent his youth working as a farm hand where his care for community and talent for farm machinery mechanics became clear. Rocky soon became one of the most sought after John Deere mechanics in the county, serving as shop foreman at Laneway, Inc. and as a devoted member of the Otego Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. As his answering machine message says, “If Rocky can’t fix it, Rocky says junk it!”
Papa never missed an opportunity to brag about his granddaughters. Always at the ready with the tightest and longest hug, he never missed a dance recital, tennis match, orchestra concert, or graduation.
We all loved him very much and will miss him terribly.
For those who wish to say farewell and pay their respects to Rocky, a service will be held at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta on Monday, May 6, 2024 at 12:30 PM with the Rev. Stephen D. Fournier officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
