She was born October 9, 1932 in Cortland.
On April 4, 1970, May married Amos Bates, Sr. in Oneonta. Amos predeceased her on August 22, 1984.
May was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and being with her family especially her grandchildren.
May is survived by her eight children, Amos (Kelly) Bates, Darlene (Robert) Wells, Rose (Wayne) Strictland, David Bates, Marvin (Darlene) Bates, Robby Bates, Rick Bates and Donna Hanford; 21 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; five siblings; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two siblings.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 19, 2016 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Funeral services will immediately follow at 5:00 PM with the Rev. Stephen Fournier officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Gilboa Cemetery.
