

She was born November 21, 1917 in Roxbury the daughter of the late Howard and Myrtle (McClenon) Scudder.
Muriel was raised in Roxbury and spent her early years there until moving to Oneonta in 1942 at the age of 25. During WWII she worked at the MICA plant on Dietz Street. In 1943 she began working as a waitress at Bresee’s Health Food Bar and continued to work there for 35 years until her retirement in 1978. While working at Bresee’s, Muriel became an icon. She loved her job and formed many life-long friendships.
On July 12, 1975, Muriel married Anthony Ross at the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta. Tony predeceased her in 1983.
She loved dancing, whether it be round and square dancing, western dancing or line dancing she just loved to dance.
Muriel was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Bresee’s Clerk’s Association, Oneonta Business Women’s Club, the Oneonta Ladies of the Moose, the Oneonta Red Hat Society and the Young at Heart Western Line Dancers. She also was a volunteer at the Oneonta American Legion.
Muriel is survived by her two sons, Robert and Aranka Lawyer of Richmondville and William Lawyer of Oneonta; two grandsons, Gary Lawyer of Otego and Robert Lawyer of Tupper Lake; eight great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two grandsons, Timothy and Jeffery Lawyer; one sister, Geraldine VanHosen; and one brother, Gerald Scudder.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Funeral services will immediately follow at 12:00 pm with the Reverend Teresa Sivers officiating. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
