Richard was born on February 9, 1943 in Wabasha, Minnesota the son of the late August and Nellie Koopman. He married Judith Lynn Haines in Oneonta on June 4, 1977. She predeceased him on March 19, 2014.
Richard served his country in the US Army during the Viet Nam War. He moved to Oneonta from Minnesota in 1976. He was hired by the City of Oneonta DPW, where he worked as a carpenter for 29 years retiring in 2005.
Richard was a member of the Oneonta and Milford American Legions and was a former member of the Eagles Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry and gardening.
Richard is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and his many good friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, his parents and his brothers and sisters.
According to his wishes, there will be no calling hours or services and he will be cremated and then be buried with his wife in the Milford Center Cemetery.
